The Silver Tower with its striking facade of deep-drawn aluminium elements shapes the Frankfurt skyline since 1978 and used to be, with a height of 166 meters, Germany’s tallest building for a long period.
schneider + schumacher was entrusted with the renewal of the building in 2008 and carried out extensive structural measures such as
fire prevention-related structural changes, the restructuring of the standard floors as well as the upgrading of the technical equipment.
Based on the corporate design of the Deutsche Bahn, but with a special adaptation to the context and the building, unit-design created a complete and independent visual system, that includes the signs in the foyer, on the office floors and in the working spaces on all 32 floors. The elevator logistics represented a particular challenge because the northern and southern situated elevators give each access to the upper or lower stories of the building.
The Wayfinding & Orientation systems underlying principle relates areas on the city side of the building to the Frankfurt skyline
and areas facing in outbound direction to the silhouette of the main station in the form of pictograms and graphics serving as privacy screen elements.
The overall result is therefore a coherent system that endows not only orientation but that links each visitor according to his position in the building with a location in the urban environment.
