The new clinic and research center of the Champalimaud Foundation, one of the best equipped facilities in Portugal, establishes new standards for cancer research, a central focus of the foundation. Here the ambulant treatment of patients take place in the same building as the basic research programs. The building ensemble designed by Charles Correa / Mumbai is located directly on the banks of the river Tejo and encompasses an amphitheater, conference and restaurant areas, as well as the headquarters of the foundation. The name references the location where many Portuguese explorers began their expeditions. An intrinsic feature of the work done by unit-design are icons made of porcelain, which either serve as area markers or direction signs. Porcelain, a material rooted in Portuguese tradition, is exceptionally suited medical environments and embodies the central values of the Champalimaud Foundation, an institution conscious of tradition yet innovative at the same time. The conceptual work was based on the underlying Corporate Design, which had already been established by Studio Dumbar / Rotterdam in 2005.
