With the construction of the new building Hall 1 designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the Messe Basel has expanded their exhibition space to 140 000 square meters. The signage- and wayfinding system created by unit-design connects the new building with the existing buildings and provides a coherent and concise visual appearance.

In 2009 unit-design won the international competition after qualifying in the preliminary election procedure. The design process included the development of a superordinate coding system and an extensive product portfolio.

Essential features of the new system are a concise visual appearance and its remarkable flexibility. The specific requirements are a result of the various states of occupancy and the needs of trade fair organizers for individualized and specific visualizations. The resulting product system distinguishes itself by its high utility, as well as clever detail solutions to enable the exchange and expandability of the signage modules. On the one hand the construction of the modules is aimed at longevity and durability, while on the other hand conveying a sophisticated elegance. The precise and puristic design transmits an overall high quality appearance.

For the production of the signage system BURRI public elements from Zurich, specialized in signage- and wayfinding systems and equipment for public spaces, could be gained as a partner. Working closely together unit-design and BURRI public elements created high quality signage elements in an extensive process of product design and prototyping to ensure long-term usage and to enable continual assembly and disassembly.
